Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Air Conditioner Servicing

With the recent Haze, many people have told us that they are switching on their air conditioners more frequently and for longer periods (myself included).

However with the heavy duty usage, we had better make sure that our air conditioner is in tip top shape! It was to my utter horror recently that I realised I had overlooked servicing my air conditioner since I moved in 3 years ago! (WHAT?!)

Hence here at Intraix, to prevent history from repeating itself, we have put together a summary of FAQs on Air Conditioner Servicing. (Yes you can thank me later for my sacrifice.)

  1. How often should we service our air conditioner?
If you switch on your air conditioner daily for at least 8 hours, you should service your air conditioner every 3 months. If you switch on your air conditioner for less than 8 hours daily, you can service your air conditioner every 4-6 months. If you rarely use your air conditioner, you can service your air conditioner every 8-10 months.
  2. How often should we top up the refrigerant in our air conditioner’s compressor?
The air conditioner servicing personnel will check the pressure of the refrigerant and then advise if you need to top it up. On average, it’s about 1.5-2 years.
  3. When should we chemical wash our air conditioner?
Chemical wash will only be suggested after the air conditioner servicing personnel has assessed your air conditioner. Typically the length of time is about 1.5-2 years before your air conditioner requires chemical wash (for those with heavy usage).
  4. What can we DIY ourselves?
If you wish to do your part to maintain your air conditioner, clean the exterior of the air conditioner and take out the filter and clean it every fortnightly. This will ensure that the air you breath is clean.
  5. When do we need to change the printed circuit board (PCB) of our air conditioner?
The air conditioner servicing personnel will assess if you need to change your PCB. If the entire electric circuit is spoilt, the average cost ranges from $200- $400 depending on the brand and model of your air conditioner.
  6. What are the common problems faced in air conditioner servicing?
    Typical problems faced are:
    a) Water leaking from the air conditioner; this happens when you don’t service your air conditioner.
    b) Air conditioner is not cold enough; this is usually a case of the fan blower being too dirty.
    c) High electrical bills; this is usually caused by dirty air conditioners as the air conditioners need to work harder to reach a cooler temperature.
  7. How long does air conditioner servicing takes?
One session typically comprises of about 45 min -1 hour with a 2-3 man team servicing your air conditioner.
  8. What does regular air conditioner servicing comprise of?
Regular air conditioner servicing comprise of cleaning the following:
    a) Water tray
    b) Fan blower
    c) Exterior and interior case of air conditioner (they will use a vacuum to get rid of any stuck particles in the air conditioner)
